Orders to South Korea
Glenn called today. He has orders to South Korea for a year - unaccompanied. Amy and the girls will stay with her parents while Glenn is gone. The good news is that he won't leave until next year. The better news is that after Glenn gets back they might be stationed a bit nearer to all their extended family.

Well, Laura, that's something we kind of have in common. My brother is in South Korea right now, unaccompanied. His wife and son got to visit him once already though, so that's good. Email me if you want to talk more about it.

Why do they do the unaccompanied? Is it so they don't have to pay for housing for the family or because there's no room or?
Sometimes it is a lack of accomodations for families, including housing, schools, commissaries, etc. Sometimes it's because the areas are not safe enough for families. I think in this case it's more likely high-tempo operations that can function faster and more efficiently without family members in tow. Leaner, cleaner, meaner - and then the service member has an overseas control date and won't (hopefully) have to deploy again for a while.
