44 Scotland Street

Alexander McCall Smith wrote and published 44 Scotland Street in serial form for The Scotsman. It was great to listen to as an audio book, but I must admit I became impatient to finish it and bought the paperback edition, too.

The story follows the lives of the residents of 44 Scotland Street and the people with whom they work or associate. Mr. McCall Smith makes each character's story interesting from Pat, the young girl who works in an unsuccessful art gallery, to 5-year-old Bertie, the child prodigy with a pushy mother who won't allow him to be a child.

I have no idea why I ignored this series when it first came out, but I'm so glad to have books to read by Alexander McCall Smith that are new to me.

Oh whoops, I posted under the wrong user--sorry!

Just wanted to say that I listened to this one earlier this year and enjoyed it--more than I have his other series. Nothing's quite as good as The #1 Ladies' Detective Agency stories!

I, too, enjoyed 44 Scotland Street. It was nice to learn about the Scottish artists (don't you love the way everyone says Peploe?).

Bertie was too much fun! I enjoyed Espresso Tales, but not as much as 44 Scotland Street. McCall Smith's humor made them fun reads.

I've been trying to listen to "The World According to Bertie" which is a sequel, but my Ipod is not cooperating. It has certainly affected my enjoyment of the whole book but I haven't given up yet. I do think Bertie is wonderful and his mom is insane.

LOL - The last audio book I tried to listen to I ended up checking the book out at the library so I could read it as well... like in bed at night, etc.

I have The Christmas Sweater that you mention in a later post on my I-Pod but I haven't listened to it yet. I guess I'm just not an auditory learner. ;)
