In need of book recommendations

Our reading club meets at the library on Wednesday to discuss Willa Cather's novel, Death Comes for the Archbishop. Members have been asked to bring a list of titles that we might want to read in the coming months.

Any suggestions? FYI - only women are in the group - at least, for all the meetings I've been to. Also, I am the youngest - or almost the youngest - member there, and I'm 48. We've read a mix of new titles and older titles.

Any help would be most appreciated. We generally read books that are NOT brand-spanking-new, because of cost.

Some books read in the past:
Water for Elephants
The Book Thief
The Last Days of Dogtown
Skeletons at the Feast
The Kite Runner
A Thousand Splendid Suns
A Cure for Dreams
The Agony and the Ecstasy
Salvation on Sand Mountain
Waiting for Snow in Havana
The Power of One

I really want to read The Help; just finished Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, and Shanghai Girls, and I think both of them could work well. As far as older books, what about:

• Saint Maybe by Anne Tyler
• Ironweed by William Kennedy
• The Moviegoer by Walker Percy
• One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexandr Solzhenitsyn

Thank you! I'm writing down all the titles you suggested. I loved The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet - it would be nice if the group went for that. And anything by Walker Percy is good for me. I'd like to read The Help, too. Shanghai Girls sounds interesting.

I appreciate your help!

Some Wildflower of my Heart by Jamie Langston Turner, my book club loved this book. She references so many books that it is fun to read and then see what she talks about that you have read.

also I wanted to say that I use your book list to keep a sweet lady from church with good books. She reads faster than I can so I am so glad to have a source of good reads to tell her about. Thank you so much.

I've not read all of these which is why I put all of them down for MY book club, but I do think any of the books in this post would be good.

How about "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" ? I loved it. Also, if they are not against a Christian title, how about "Leota's Garden" by Francine Rivers.
Or, have you read "The Hawk and the Dove" by Penelope Willock? Wonderful, esp for a group.

Thank you, Sherry and Julie! I've added your suggestions to the list.

I think they read The Power and the Glory a few years ago, but I'm adding the rest. Some of those are books I've already read and enjoyed so I can recommend them with some knowledge of their merit. I also loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and The Hawk and the Dove, and I think they would have no objection to any Christian titles, either.

I'm leaving for the meeting in just a little bit. I really appreciate all the suggestions - y'all are great!

If y'all haven't read it, yet, may I suggest Memoirs of a Geisha? It is fascinating and a good read. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the life of a geisha.

Susan, they went with The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, Dr. Whortle's School by Anthony Trollope, and Earthly Possessions by Anne Tyler as the next three books to read.

But I took your recommendation and requested Memoirs of a Geisha through PaperBackSwap to read myself!
