Homecoming tonight (at the local high school)

Kim called us this morning to let us know that the homecoming parade would be coming by our house at 1:00 p.m. I didn't even know high schools still did homecoming parades, so we ate lunch and quickly cleaned the kitchen and got everyone seated on the front porch ready to watch the parade.

Hayley, Marley, and Sam sat on the steps closest to the sidewalk.

The police came and closed off the street to traffic, then another police cruiser drove slowly along with lights flashing. Behind it were the high school flag team and band.

Kelli is part of the homecoming court, and she was in the first car!

The cheerleaders - from high school down to elementary school - were there. The junior varsity cheerleaders had a mascot and a chicken-wire and crepe-paper model of their opponent. (I didn't know anyone did that any more, either!)

(They'll be playing the Bulldogs tonight, in case you were wondering... )

It was a sizable parade, and it even included animals! One pick-up was sponsored by a pet-grooming business so it was filled with dogs, who with the aid of the people handling them, waved at the onlookers.

The girls loved watching the horseback riders. The parade drove through town and paused behind the courthouse to have a pep rally. Then they resumed their course, and finished back at the high school.

It was a fun experience for us and we're looking forward to watching it again next year!

It does look like fun. It's been ages since we've seen a parade.

I'm glad you explained that was a bulldog. It looked an awful lot like a pig, to me. This is the kind of clean, enjoyable fun that seems to exist now only in small towns. I love that the police came through to close off the street just before the parade arrived. What a fun afternoon surprise!

Dy, it looked like a pig to us, too! But we saw posters and banners with "Beat the Bulldogs!" on them, so we finally decided it must be a bulldog.
