Stuck in the 19th century

Alas! We cannot get phone jacks upstairs! The telephone company would have to run the line on the outside of the house, leaving it to the mercy of foul weather, birds and other creatures, and - as the friendly, helpful, local employee of the phone company pointed out - making the front of the house (and the back) look ugly.

Okay. So now we are back where we started. The upside is that the second floor will remain blessedly quiet.

And if anyone REALLY needs to talk to us, I suppose they'll "leave a message at the tone."

So, why not a phone downstairs with its wireless mate (just need a power plug in) to have phone access upstairs in case of emergency. That's why I've done.

That's what the phone guy suggested and that's what we've tried in the past.

For some reason (the composition of these old walls?) cordless phones don't work in this house - even from room to room on the downstairs level. So our one cordless phone can be used in the family room and if we try to use it elsewhere, we get crackle and lose signal. Very frustrating.

But maybe the cordless phones now are much stronger that they were four years ago. I'm willing to give it a try, at least!
