Finishing up a baby quilt
My mother started this quilt in 1986 for Tom, who was born in May of 1987. She cross-stitched the alphabet squares, and cut and hand-pieced all the squares together before she put it aside.
And years went by. Several years ago she gave the work-in-progress to me so I could finish it.
Now before I start another "new" quilt I want to finish this one up first.
I have the cotton batting ready, but have to find a suitable backing and binding.
Mom bought and gave me this fabric when Tom was born and I made curtains for his room with it. We used the curtains in the children's rooms in every house we lived in until we moved here. I would cut and alter and sew them to fit the windows and I thought I still had enough material for a small crib quilt. But I don't! So I have been going through the other material I have and have yet to turn up anything suitable.
I hate to have to make a trip to the fabric store, but it may just have to happen.

What neat stories!
But couldn't you use that darling curtain fabric if you pieced it with something else? It would be such a nice ending to the curtain story. You could use a solid color or two that matches the front and bind it in similar gingham. . .just saying, because I love planning colors and quilts!
I love the curtain fabric. Do you think you could seam the panels of it together to use on the back? Afterall, it is the back...
All that's left of the curtains in a small valance. I thought about piecing it with another fabric for the back, but I decided to save it to use for another future baby quilt for one of the other children - since they all remember having the curtains in their room at one time or another.
I found some leftover golden yellow material in my cabinet and it was just the right size for the back. I also had enough medium blue (that my mom used as squares on the front) to make the binding.
Last night I pinned the layers together and maybe next week I can start quilting. This week I have my granddaughters (and son and daughter-in-law) visiting!
My mom used this fabric to make my baby blanket when I was born. I still have it. So great. That was over three decades ago- I would love to find more.
