Chestnuts

This year looks like it's going to be a good one for our chestnut harvest. Last year we had very few, but already this year the chestnuts are everywhere.

I love the shape and the shade of our chestnut trees, but I do not like to eat chestnuts. They are probably the only nut I have tried and have disliked.

And while the prickly green case of the chestnut looks so pretty and fluffy on the tree,

when it is ripe and ready to be harvested one should not have tender fingers.

Dad picked a bag of chestnuts in about 15 minutes. I'm giving them to my friend, Faye, who loves chestnuts and will actually eat them.

I do not care for chestnuts either. When we were in NYC back in December we saw street vendors selling them roasted on every block. Being pregnant at the time, the smell turned my stomach.

DD#3 gathered acorns from the side yard and put them in a glass cylinder which also houses a candle.....

making fun autumn centerpiece ~

I'll bet your chestnuts would look decorative that way.

Hi Laura! Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog! When I read about your chesnuts all I could think of was "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..." and I've been singing it all day to myself! lol!

I recall not liking them in NYC when I was a child, but now that we roast them ourselves, I really do love them. We eat them for snacks or put them in dressing. Yum!
We have a walnut tree next to our yard and some year I do want to collect the walnuts and do the work of getting the nuts out. But it's very labor intensive.

i wish we had a chestnut tree. not so much for the chestnuts (i'm not sure if i like them... i don't think i've ever had one! must fix that this year and at least try)... but for that "thunk" sound when the nuts fall from the tree.
