The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society has been called the "feel-good" book of the year. At first I had no interest in the book, but every week I'd read another review praising it, so I finally asked our librarian if she'd get it for me.

This is a very comfortable book to read. Set in the year 1946, after World War II is over and rebuilding has begun, the story is told in the form of letters. I found it very similar to Helene Hanff's book, 84, Charing Cross Road, and I liked that.

Literature is discussed, lonely people find love and families, and questions are answered. What more could you ask for in a book?

Like you, I've read numerous glowing reviews of this book. By the time I get around to reading it, the movie will have been made and three sequels published. :) I'm so far behind.

It's a very fast read, so perhaps you'll have read it before the movie is even in production!

Yep.

I liked your comparison to 84, Charing Cross Road. It also reminded me of The Thirteenth Tale, with the characters' love of reading.

It sounds like a great book for the Christmas holidays when I've finished with my Cybils panelist responsibilities. I'm like Framed, so far behind, but then again as I ask my children sometimes, behind what? I read what I read when I read it and enjoy it even if everyone else has already been there.
