The Moderne Log Cabin Blanket is finished

While Penny was here for the weekend I finished the Moderne Log Cabin Blanket for Sarah. As much as I love the Lizard Ridge Afghan I made for Jacy, I think this design is warmer because of the garter stitch and sturdier because all the blocks are knit together rather than seamed. And it's L-A-R-G-E.



Now I can start Joan's Mitered Squares Blanket.

Moderne Log Cabin Blanket - Block 9 is endless

I knit on block 9 while we watch episodes of Lost on DVD. I think I'm going to have to knit on it at other times if I'm ever to finish it.


See the tiny marker? It marks Garter Stitch Row 45. I have to knit 99 garter stitch rows. Then I'll have to knit the border.

Moderne Log Cabin: intarsia

I am now finally working on Block 9 of Sarah's afghan, the Mason-Dixon Moderne Log Cabin blanket. I've been thinking of it as two blocks, but according to the pattern, it is one block knit using intarsia to join the colors. (The colors in the top photo are not true.)

This may take some time. I have to knit 99 garter stitch rows for this block. But it makes for good movie-watching knitting, and the temperatures are still cool enough to make me thankful I can drape it over me and stay warm while I knit.

Moderne Log Cabin, block 8

I am on garter stitch row 44 of block 8. Only 22 more to go with the gray, then I begin the final two blocks, which have to be made together as they're joined by knitting intarsia.

Block 7 is finished

Of course, Sarah would wear black today, so the enormousness of block 7 is unnoticeable. But it's finished. It ate up almost 6 full skeins of yarn. Now I'll start block 8 - which actually is the largest (I think). I only bought 8 skeins of yarn for that block so I'm back to praying the yarn holds out to finish it. And I have to switch needles. My Addi Turbo circular needle will be too short for block 8, so I'm going to use Denise needles with a 52" cable. Fun, fun, fun.

Moderne Log Cabin... still

Sarah's blanket is coming along - very slowly. I put it aside to do knitting for other people during December and most of January, and just picked it up again last night.

The nice thing about it is that it's large enough to cover me comfortably as I knit on it. Last night Joan and I had it draped over the two of us while we sat on the sofa watching a movie and I added rows to block 7. We were toasty warm!

The bad thing is that knitting loooooooong rows of garter stitch is a teensy bit boring, so I'm easily distracted by small projects such as socks, baby hats, dishcloths, baby afghans, etc.

I'm setting a goal of finishing up block 7 by the end of next week. Pray that I get it done, please!

Another block - 6, I think

The Moderne Log Cabin blanket is now large enough to keep me warm while I knit it. Sarah likes it and I find it perfect knitting for reading or watching a movie with Steve. Who knew garter stitch could be so rewarding?

Blocks 5 and 6

I had plenty of yarn for block 5 of the Moderne Log Cabin blanket. I even have an entire skein left over! Block 6 is coming along well, and it looks as though I'll finish it with yarn to spare also. In the meantime I'm waiting for a shipment of yarn intended for one of the larger later blocks. There are only 10 blocks in all so I feel like I'm halfway done, even though the blocks are getting larger and I will have to do some kind of edging around the blanket.

Block 4

Block 4 of the Moderne Log Cabin blanket is done. I saved all four scraps of yarn from the four skeins and had to tie three of them on in order to complete the block. Thus far the colors have had food-related names, except for the first block, which is "Firecracker Heather." Block 2 is "Blueberry." Block 3 is "Asparagus." Block 4 is "Pumpkin." Block 5 is "Cranberry."

Right now it looks as though I'll easily have enough yarn to complete block 5, but I'm still saving all leftover yarn, just in case... .

Block 3 - finished

I did run out of yarn before finishing the block. Knit Picks no longer sells the color "Asparagus" and my third skein ran out about 1/4 of the way through the bind-off row. But I remembered throwing away about 16 inches of yarn from the end of the 2nd skein, and for once I was happy David had slacked off on his trash duty - I found the piece of yarn in the trash can! I tied it to the working yarn with a square knot and finished binding off. It's not beautiful, but as it's on the back of the blanket it doesn't show, and functionality is what I'm after anyway.

Now I'm praying and hoping that 4 skeins of yarn is enough for Block 4, or I'll be running out of yarn again... .

Block 3

I'm working on Block 3 of the Moderne Log Cabin Blanket from Mason-Dixon Knitting. I fear I will not have enough yarn to finish the block. Why did I not do the math before buying the yarn a year ago? Now the color I'm using is no longer sold by Knit Picks. This could be bad.

My computer is ill and Steve says he will have to completely strip it and re-format it. Perhaps I will make a lot of progress on the blanket with no computer to use for the next several weeks.

Moderne Log Cabin Blanket

Jacy came home with us after church on Sunday. She said she left one of her roommates sitting on their sofa swathed in the Lizard Ridge Afghan I made for Jacy last year. Her roommate said, "I see now why you always drag this thing around with you."

The temperature is dropping and a cold wind is blowing - perfect weather for knitting a wool blanket - so yesterday I started Sarah's Moderne Log Cabin Blanket (pattern is in Mason-Dixon Knitting). I'm using Knit Picks Wool of the Andes and US size 7 Addi Turbo circular needles. I figure I have until August to finish it. I just hope we bought enough yarn for it... .
